When I saw the expression “Mother's Day 2020, the one where I was quarantined” I laughed, remembering with gratitude this feast celebrated on the 10th of the month. This year, mother's day will unite many nations. In Mexico and many parts of Latin America, Mother's Day is celebrated on May 10 of each year. In America, Australia, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Switzerland, Turkey, and Belgium, we honor them on the second Sunday of May. Under the coronavirus pandemic this year, somehow in the world, we commemorate our moms with gratitude the same day. It is fantastic thinking that on Sunday, the day of the Lord, we participate in the Eucharist, becoming one in Christ. This year we strengthen the same unity in this Sacrament, remembering the joy of motherhood. 'Mother's day 2020, the one where I was quarantined.' Indeed, we developed as human beings within our mother's womb. She provided us safe care and nourishment for nine months. After that, we mature our ability to connect with the world, thanks to them. We had different experiences with mom. Nobody has the same or perfect childhood. However, mom's affection and dedication are given without asking for anything in return. Why? For love. Their love created communion and affection with others. They were happy with our happiness. It is the expression of a different love that made them identify with us, feeling that our good was theirs, although, at the end, they expect to receive any rewards. We want to thank all the mothers who are part of the beautiful and fantastic diversity of motherhood. Yes moms, you were the place where we were in quarantine! This Mother's Day, we celebrate recognizing their victories, no matter how small they may be. We acknowledge that Mother's Day may bring up for someone grief of a mother lost or different feeling for the mother that someone never had. We pray for them in the Sunday Eucharist. You can join us at the Eucharist, praying in thanksgiving for all of them. "Mother's day 2020, the one where I was quarantine". Yes, we were! But it seems essential remembering that quarantine has a different meaning of isolation. Quarantine is the separation of people who have potentially been exposed to a contagious disease, reducing the risk of them infecting others. Quarantine is not isolation. Isolation means the separation of people who have been diagnosed with an infectious disease. While families all across California and the USA are being affected by the coronavirus pandemic, and social distance must be kept, this should not prevent us from celebrating moms. We can create forms to celebrate Mother's day during coronavirus distancing time, spending safe time like the parade outside of mom's house, a common activity these days. Another way is the videoconference party, singing and sharing joy with them. Anything is possible. On Mother’s Day 2020, more than ever, our mothers deserve a great day of their own. Remember, mom is the experience of love, who is shown us to be the persons that we are. Yes, Mother's Day cannot exist without children (and dads too). We congratulate our Salesians sisters and many other religious women who exercised their motherhood by loving and taking care of those whom God puts in their path. Nuns and consecrated women are called to become "moms" in a particular way, and at Saint Mary's, we are thankful for their presence and job. Have a great celebration!
