As we listen to the Gospel today, many of us think about our experiences with prayer. We probably remember instances when we have received the desired answer to our prayers, but there are other instances when it seems that we have prayed in vain. However, the gospel message is clear—we must pray with confidence and persistence. Today's readings point out some important things about prayer. In the first reading, we see the need for community effort. To ensure victory against his enemies, Moses had to stand on top of the hill, praying to God and lifting the staff of God in his hands. As long as he stayed that way, the Israelites won. But before long, Moses got tired; he just couldn't stand with his arms outstretched. He needed the help of Aaron and Hur. It was only with the help of these companions that Moses was able to help his people.
